How often should you detox?

Some people choose to detox for a three month stretch once a year, while many of my clients (and I myself) choose to take Total Detox on a daily basis year-round to reduce the side-effects of chemicals, pollutants, stress, and poor eating habits.

Possible side effects when detoxing:

* As the body releases toxins you may experience a worsening of symptoms, headaches, light-headedness and tiredness. This is perfectly normal.

* Soon you will experience an increased sense of well-being, renewed energy, clearer thoughts, and a sense of purity and lightness.

FOODS TO CONCENTRATE ON DURING DETOXIFICATION:

* High-sulfur-content foods such as eggs, garlic, legumes, and onions.  (If you're like me and have gall bladder problems, leave these out since they'll cause an attack you won't forget!  I can eat egg whites and legumes just fine though.)

* Good sources of water-soluble fibers such as pears, oat bran, apples and legumes.

* Cabbage family vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage.

* Artichokes, beets, and carrots.

* Avoid sugars, overly processed foods, hydrogenated or partially-hydrogenated oils, and refined carbs.

* I feel best when on a low-carb diet such as South Beach or Glucose Revolution.  Simple carbs really slow me down and make me feel bad.  (Headaches, rapid heartbeat, severe fatigue, dizziness, etc.)

Answer the questions below and give yourself the following points for each answer:  No=0 Rarely =1 Often=2  When you are finished, total up your score.

1. Do you feel tired, lethargic or sluggish upon waking and even throughout the day?

2. Do you have difficulty concentrating or have slow or surreal thinking?

3. Are you on any hormone replacement therapy such as estrogen or thyroid?

4. Do you take any oral contraceptives?

5. Have you taken antibiotics for more than a month at any one time, or have you taken antibiotics more than three times in the past year?

6. Do you feel depressed or have mood changes?

7. Do you get more than one or two colds per year?

8. Do you get post-nasal drip, congestion, or a stuffy nose or sinuses upon waking or throughout the day?

9. Do you have bad breath, a coated tongue, or a bitter or metallic taste in your mouth?

10. Do you have strong body odor?

11. Do you have strong smelling urine?

12. Do you have trouble sleeping or feel unrefreshed upon waking?

13. Do you have sore muscles or joints for no apparent reason?

14. Are your nails weak, soft or brittle?

15. Do you have dark circles under your eyes?

16. Do you have digestive problems such as bloating, fast or indigestion a couple of hours after eating?

17. Do you have less than one bowel movement per day?

18. Do you often feel stressed or anxious?

19. Are you sensitive to perfume, foods, or chamicals?

20. Do you have allergies to various household products, dust, and molds?

21. Do you have eczema, dry skin, acne, or rashes?

22. Do you gain weight easily?

23. Do you have food cravings, especially carbohydrate-rich foods and/or sweets?

24. Do you have pain or discomfort on the right side of your stomach occasionally or after eating?

25. Does dietary fiber cause constipation?

If your score was 0-23 it would still be beneficial to do a cleansing. 

If your score was over 23 you definitely should consider doing a cleansing and following a detoxification diet.   A good rule of thumb is to detox at least twice a year or at the beginning of each season.
