Do You Have Candida?

If you're reading this page, chances are you're suffering with Candida. Perhaps you've been to your doctor, or many of them, trying to find answers to your chronic symptoms.  You may have been told "nothing's wrong" or may have been handed a prescription for one thing or another, but nothing seems to help.

My Story:

I suffered with chronic Candida for many years before finally discovering what the true culprit was.  I went to a dozen doctors and was prescribed everything from antibiotics to anti-depressants!  After getting fed up with feeling awful and not getting any help from the medical community, I went in search of answers myself.  I finally found them too.  (You'll find some of my favorite books on Candida below.)  I was partially relieved to have at last discovered what was wrong with me, but upset at the same time since none of the doctors I had seen even mentioned or suspected this as being the problem!

To be honest, it was a long, slow road to recovery and I still battle with Candida at times so I have to watch what I eat and manage my stress level, but I'm here to say you CAN regain your health and energy again.  In fact, even if you aren't sure you have Candida, it couldn't hurt doing a cleanse once or twice a year just to be sure.  You may discover that many of your annoying and chronic health problems lessen or disappear completely! 

Did You Know?

Candida thrives in heat and humidity.  No matter what symptoms you have at this time, they'll worsen in hot, humid, or muggy weather.  Since Candida is a fungus the humidty and heat help it to grow and spread.  (My symptoms lessened considerably when I moved from Maryland to Arizona.) 

Sugar, alcohol, and starches are Candida's favorite foods.  Symptoms usually worsen after consuming any of these since it feeds the yeast and helps it to grow.  As the Candida grows and spreads, it releases more toxins into your body which produce stronger and more widespread symptoms. 

Stress can trigger Candida symptoms.  It's common knowledge that stress plays a big role in many illnesses.  It lowers the immune system and it can no longer fight off the Candida and keep it under control.  Working too much, sleeping too little, and just being stressed in general worsen Candida symptoms since our weakened state allows the yeast to increase.

Candida Diet

For the first two weeks to two months (depending on how bad your symptoms are and how long you've been suffering with Candida) it's good to follow a diet based on the following foods.  In fact, you may feel so good by eatings these foods that you'll want to stick to the Candida diet for life, adding some moderations along the way as you heal.  You'll feel more energetic, have greater focus, a more positive mood, and will lose weight too!

Protein—

For Omnivores: Fish, lean meats, seafood, and poultry. (You may eat these, along with everything from the vegetarian and vegan list.)

For Vegetarians: Eggs and dairy products, especially plain yogurt with live active cultures (as well as items on the Vegan list.)

For Vegans: Nuts, seeds, nut butters, beans, legumes, soy.

*Protein is not only filling, but it helps your body to heal and provides sustained energy levels.

*Note: Some people do well having cheese and milk, while others experience an uprise in Candida symptoms.  Try them and see how you feel. 

Vegetables—

You’ll want to choose vegetables that are at the low end of the glycemic index. This means they have the lowest sugar content. The best vegetables to focus on at this time are green, leafy vegetables, peppers, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cucumbers, onions, eggplant, tomato, squashes, carrots (raw carrots only since cooking raises the glycemic value) and celery. Avoid corn, potatoes and yams at this time since they turn into sugar in your system.

*Not only do vegetables starve the Candida, but they also absorb the poisons Candida leaves behind, carrying them out of your system.

Fruit—

Choose only low-sugar fruits: Granny Smith apples, oranges, grapefruit, lemons, limes, cranberries, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries (all berries in general.) Avoid fruit juice since these are very high in sugar. Although it’s natural sugar, Candida doesn’t know the difference!

Grains—

• Millet

• Brown rice

* Note: Some people feel okay when eating whole grains on their Candida Diet, while others have a problem with them.  These are the three grains that seem to cause the least amount of side effects, but pay close attention to how you feel after eating them.

Beverages—

Water: This is the best beverage of all. It helps to rehydrate the body, keeps your skin clear and supple, reduces headaches, and flushes out toxins. A great morning "body-flush" is to drink a glass of warm water with a tablespoon of lemon juice and a packet of artificial sweetener mixed in.

Herbal teas: There are so many varieties of herbal teas on the market now, you should never feel deprived or bored when giving up sugary drinks. Have them hot or iced, plain or with a packet of artificial sweetener.

Sweeteners—

Splenda, Equal, Sweet n’ Low, etc.: There’s a lot of conflicting information about artificial sweeteners. I myself can use Sweet n’ Low with no problem, but get terrible headaches if I have Splenda or Equal. My oldest daughter though doesn’t have a problem with any of them. Also, some reports show that artificial sweeteners can cause various health problems. Use your judgment here. I believe that everything in moderation is okay!

Fats—

• Olive, flax, coconut, grape seed, and canola oils

• Butter

• Healthy Spread (Make this yourself by mixing one pound of butter with one cup of olive oil. Delicious AND healthy!)

• Avocados

*Before starting your Candida diet, be sure to shop for these foods and toss out anything that would be a temptation for you. By having the right foods in your kitchen it will be easier to stick with your healing plan.

Candida Die-Off Symptoms

Candida die-off, often referred to as Herxheimer Reaction, happens when the Candida yeast in your body dies off. It produces toxins at a pace too fast for your body to process and eliminate, thereby causing a variety of uncomfortable symptoms. The good news is, they don’t last.

Here’s just a partial list of what you may experience as the Candida die off:

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Fuzzy thinking
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Angry outbursts
  • Gas & bloating
  • Flatulence
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Body aches
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue
  • Exhaustion
  • Need for more sleep
  • Sweating
  • Chills
  • Nausea

This list may seem overwhelming, but please know that it’s actually a good sign to experience at least some of these symptoms. This is proof positive that your Candida Healing Plan is working!

How To Lessen Candida Die-Off Symptoms:

Drink lots of water! This helps to flush out toxins from your body. A good rule of thumb is to drink a gallon of water a day, or half your body weight in ounces. For example, say you weigh 160 pounds, you’d want to be sure to drink at least 80 ounces of water a day.

Soak in the bathtub. Add a cup of Epsom salts or baking soda to the water (as hot as you feel comfortable with) to help draw out toxins through your skin.

Get some exercise. Sweating helps to release toxins through your skin. Regular exercise is also good for your mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing. Most of us don’t get nearly enough! Aim for a half hour of cardio exercise at least three times a week and a half hour of combined stretching and weights three times a week. Alternate days and take a day off each week.

Candida die-off symptoms usually last a week or two. Once they disappear you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel!
